Jim specializes in landscape and nautical work, as well as depicting scenes with an "Americana" feeling. He finds that his plein air work is often very different from his studio pieces, with his plein air paintings having a much "looser" feel and sometimes more vibrant colors. He enjoys painting outdoors, as he learns something new each time and can carry this experience back to the studio. Jim draws his inspiration from the many scenic areas and historic sites that are the foundation of the landscape of the New York and New England areas. "I like to try to find and capture the beauty and simplicity of the world around us, and to express that through my work. If my paintings can provide someone with a place to escape from their everyday life, I have succeeded."
